Our CurriculumThe Chinese language and culture curriculum at Stowe Middle and High School is integrated from grade 6 to 12, with an emphasis placed upon providing the opportunity for steady and stable growth for each student, year after year.
Building a Language CommunityBeing a small school means that students go through their Chinese learning journey with many of the same classmates from beginning to end. These relationships form a supportive network and a common interest group, helping students to further their learning by creating a Chinese language community within our school.

Middle School
In 6th grade, all students at Stowe Middle School are enrolled in three trimesters of language exploratory classes: French, Spanish, and Chinese. The Chinese exploratory trimester aims to provide students with:
At the end of 6th grade, students choose which language they wish to continue studying in 7th grade. In general, it is very rare for students to switch languages once they begin studying their language of choice in 7th grade. We strongly encourage students to stick with their language to reach the highest possible proficiency level by the end of their time at Stowe.
In 7th and 8th grade, students enrolled in Chinese classes attend class 4 or 5 days a week, and can expect an amount of homework and study time similar to other classes at the middle school level.
- A basic introduction to the experience of learning the Chinese language
- Opportunities to research areas of interest related to Chinese culture
- A framework for making decisions about which language to study in the future

High School
Students who studied Chinese in middle school typically advance to Chinese 2 for their first year of high school. Chinese 2 is similar in structure and expectations to Chinese 1, but students will, of course, need to remember and retain the content from Chinese 1 in order to be successful! Review is built in to the course structure, but consistent study at home is also recommended.
Students who did not study Chinese in middle school and wish to begin in high school at a Chinese 1 level should arrange to speak with Ms. Harris about their options.
As more students progress through their Chinese studies, higher levels of Chinese courses will be offered. Please check this website and the current Program of Studies for courses offered.
